Plot Summary Howard Cottrell was out golfing one afternoon, when he hit his golf ball in the rough. He goes to retrieve the misplaced golf ball then, everything goes black. When he comes too, he can smell a scent of rubber and all he can see is black. He soon realizes that he is paralyzed and being rolled on a gurney down a hallway in some sort of bag, a body bag. He can hear everything that is going on but, he can not move or speak.
He can only manage to make faint sounds. After the body bag is opened, he discovers that he is in an autopsy room; from the looks from it he is about to be examined. The technicians in the autopsy room are very unobserveant and too focused on making conversation to realize this man is still very much alive.
They turn up music and can not hear the faint noises he is trying so hard to make. Howard begins to panic as the scissors come closer and closer to making an incision in his abdomen. The female autopsy technician begins to examine a scar on his lower body and Howard gets an erection. Thankfully this, saves his life. The reader later discovers that an exotic snake bit Howard, which got him into the paralyzed state.

Elements of Horror in the story: One of the hey elements in a horror story is suspense. There is plenty of suspense in 'Autopsy Room 4.' The reader is waiting to see of the technicians are really going to preform and autopsy on this man while, he is still alive. While the reader is on the edge of the seat, there are many close calls for our main character. The reader is holding their breath while the scissors and other implements are dangled over this still alive man. Stephen king wrote a truly bizarre and horrifying story.
Literary Element of the Story The setting of 'Autopsy Room 4' is the morgue where Howard Cottrell is taken. The Morgue house the hall, where the story begins, and autopsy room 4 where most of the action takes place. The theme of this story is to be cautious because inobservance leads to stupidity. The mood of the story is urgency and panic. The narrator, Howard, is in a state of panic because he gains consciousness and realizes that he is paralyzed and in a body bag. Imagery is apparent throughout the story but the best example is Howard's description of the autopsy room.

He then attended the University of Maine at Orono. He graduated in 1970 with a B.A. With his degree he was qualified to teach on a high school level. He married Tabitha Spruce in January or 1971 Stephen's first proffesional short story, 'The glass floor', was sold to Startling Mystery Stopires in 1976.
